In some geographical regions, geothermal energy can be harnessed from extremely hot water and steam generated from medium to high temperature (160 to >200 degree Celsius) resources which are sufficient to generate electricity in dedicated power plants.

Welltec offers multiple solutions using an all-metal expandable packer to assist operators in various stages of drilling and completion. Welltec Annular Barrier (WAB®) technology can be incorporated into helping achieve challenging high temperature cement jobs and provide isolation for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and stimulations, as well as facilitating re-lining operations.

Well construction and remediation

Geothermal well construction requires packer technology resistant to high temperatures, often combined with cement to enhance integrity and protect the life span of the wellbore.

These solutions also provide zonal isolation for stimulation if required and facilitate the remediation of wells that are shut-in due to casing collapse, burst or buckling, a common issue in this sector.

Current designs of the WAB are qualified for up to 300°C, which can be used for injection and production wells with the possibility of modifications to address specific requirements.

Welltec® Magma Packer allows for enhanced well integrity, high expansion zonal isolation of undesired fractures. When coupled with the Welltec® Flow Valve (WFV™), access and flow control for both production and injection wells can also be controlled.

Combined, they offer the unique opportunity of establishing EGS and ensuring stimulation and flow control in open hole.
