Welltec reaches semi-final of American-Made Geothermal Manufacturing Prize
Welltec® has progressed to the semi-final stage of the American-Made Geothermal Manufacturing Prize – a prize designed to spur innovation and address manufacturing challenges fundamental to operating in harsh geothermal environments. We are one of the Top 10 entrants remaining in the competition, and one of four extremely capable companies taking on the challenge of providing zonal isolation in a geothermal setting.
Our proposed solution incorporates Additive Manufacturing (AM) into the production of a Welltec Magma Packer - the latest addition to the award-winning Welltec Annular Barrier (WAB®) portfolio. In doing so, we address the critical need for effective isolation in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), while simultaneously making such systems more technically and economically viable.
In the semi-final – dubbed the ‘Make’ stage – we will utilize our AM capability to complete the proposed packer solution. This will be assessed via live demonstration to a panel of experts.
Supporting geothermal development
Welltec is playing an increasingly important role in the development of renewable energy sources such as geothermal, where our technology is helping operators with geothermal well construction and revival.
Our involvement includes a partnership with the Wells of Opportunity project at the Coso Geothermal Field, where our role is focussed on the development of devices suitable for zonal isolation along both cased and open hole wellbores under geothermal conditions.
The project which is overseen by the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) and is funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE), aims to utilize technology for the advancement of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS).
An all-metal Welltec Annular Barrier (WAB®) is being developed for the ongoing DOE-Welltec project where it will form an integral part of an enhanced zonal isolation system for EGS applications in manmade reservoirs.
The significance of EGS
EGS will help increase the efficiency of geothermal wells, making geothermal energy a more accessible and viable option throughout key locations around the world. We take a key role in supporting the process of advancing the viability of such systems through our well completion technology.
Our WAB variant known as the Welltec Magma Packer is overcoming geothermal challenges of:
- extreme thermal stress cycles
- acidic corrosion
- extreme pressure swings through life-of-well
