Background

A Malaysian operator needed detailed data from four wells located at two platforms offshore Malaysia. A number of physical and operational restrictions imposed challenges, which required special attention in order to achieve optimal results from the logging runs. Two conveyance methods were considered; coiled tubing using a catenary system, and alternatively a tractor on wireline. The tractor approach was chosen for the job based on the track record and proven performance capabilities.

Operation

The equipment and crew were mobilized and dispatched offshore. In spite of the tight space limitations the equipment was assembled and prepared for the logging operation through detailed planning. The toolstring consisted of a Well Tractor® 218 XR (Xtra Reach) with a Production Logging Tool and Reservoir Performance Monitor. The toolstring was conveyed uneventfully past multiple changes in tubing size and downhole jewelry.

The cumulative distance traveled passed 81,000 ft., thereby setting a new record in Malaysia.

Achievements

All logging jobs were completed and fulfilled the operator’s requirements 100% with regard to efficiency, service quality and HSE.

The selected approach enabled the crew to be reduced from 21 to 8, avoided the use of a workboat during the operation and reduced the weight of the equipment to 2.3 tons thereby enabling the fixed platform crane to be used.

Overall the operation provided the operator with high quality data due to enhanced precision as well as a highly efficient campaign.
