A gas-lift oil producer well in Alaska encountered a critical tubing connection leak at a depth of 5,000 ft. The well featured 3-½” tubing with a weight of 9.3 ppf. From its original 2.992”, the inner diameter (ID) of the tubing could not be reduced any further than 2.7” as a result of repair.
The goal was to effectively close the leak while ensuring minimal reduction to the tubing ID to maintain production levels. The operating conditions included a pressure of 3,400 psi and a temperature of 126°F (52°C) at the patch setting depth.
The operation began with meticulous planning in collaboration with the client, ensuring that all procedures were approved and executed smoothly. The first step was to pull an existing retrievable patch and perform a clean-out operation utilizing a Well Cleaner® Wishbone Honer (WBH) in order to prepare the patch setting interval.
The requirements for the Isealate Springblade Patch included a collapse pressure of 150 bar, and a burst pressure 200 bar.
Once run in hole, the patch was set at the identified depth of 5,000 ft, and a subsequent pressure test at 172 bar was performed for 30 minutes with zero loss in pressure. A multi-finger caliper log confirmed a tubing ID of 2.71”, keeping the ID within the pre-defined limits, translating to a reduction of 0.282", or 7 mm.
The tubing connection leak was resolved with only a 0.282" (7 mm) effect on the tubing’s ID, enabling production to be reinstated to optimal levels.
The successful pressure test and adherence to operational requirements demonstrated the effectiveness of the Isealate Springblade Patch in maintaining well integrity under challenging conditions, achieving 100% client satisfaction.
This operation showcases careful planning, precise execution, and advanced sealing technology, which effectively restores well integrity, optimizes recovery, and delivers excellent cost efficiency.
