The Welltec® Wellgrab product range was named Winner in the OWI Awards 2025, bringing home the trophy for Best Example of Downhole Innovation.
Presented during the prestigious OWI Awards ceremony in Aberdeen on November 12, this recognition highlights a standout contribution to advancing downhole fishing and retrieval operations. Traditionally reliant on indirect feedback and interpretation, these operations now benefit from a step-change in certainty and control – delivered through a suite of Wellgrab tools built around motorized engagement, real-time measurement, and fully repeatable actions.
Prize-winning features
Wellgrab is the first fishing solution in the world to actively measure the engagement process downhole, replacing subjective surface interpretation with objective, real-time data. If an initial attempt to latch is unsuccessful, the system can automatically reset and re-engage, avoiding the need for additional runs. The result is faster, more efficient interventions, with reduced operational risk and greater retrieval success—particularly in complex well geometries or when dealing with irregular or hard-to-capture items.
Rather than offering a single-purpose tool, Wellgrab was conceived as a tool kit of solutions – one that can be rapidly adapted to a range of downhole challenges.
Tool heads can be swapped in minutes, allowing on-the-fly adaptation to evolving wellsite conditions. With this modular approach, Wellgrab serves as both a precision fishing toolkit and a solution for manipulation or repositioning tasks requiring high accuracy – such as crown plug retrieval or the collection of fragile items, even in debris-heavy environments.
This is the second major industry award for the Wellgrab range, with the first-generation tool recognized at the 2022 Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation (MEAs), then operating under partnership between Welltec and Autentik AS.
Following Weltec’s full acquisition of Autentik AS in February 2023, many new options, features and capabilities have been added to produce the advanced range available today – such as debris-tolerant engagement, intelligent grapples, and features not available with any other comparable system in the industry.
